A community cookbook to support a small school and a children's meal program in Vancouver

What does a small elementary school, a group of local Hastings Sunrise restaurants, a cookbook, and a backpack have in common? 

It’s “giving back.”

Garibaldi Annex Elementary, located in the Hastings Sunrise community in Vancouver BC, has teamed up with local restaurants to bring you Hastings Sunrise Cooks, a project benefiting the children living in and around the Vancouver community. 

It all started with a group of parents from Garibaldi Annex Elementary, known as the community’s small school with a big heart, recognizing that through their efforts, they could help kids in and around the community to succeed.  

Partnering up with popular local eateries, the team is developing a cookbook featuring all the yumminess the Hastings Sunrise neighbourhood has to offer.  

But that’s not the best part.  This book gives back in a big way.  All proceeds from the sale of this book are going to two charitable causes, with one portion supporting learning outcomes for the kids of Garibaldi Annex directly, and another portion benefiting the children’s meal program Backpack Buddies.

Backpack Buddies is a unique program that addresses a very real need in the Vancouver community while providing a tangible opportunity for kids to help other kids. Through this program, school children are invited to partake in fundraisers, hold food drives, and pack backpacks full of food to feed other kids in need. Backback Buddies helps to support children who need nutritious meals beyond the free or reduced price breakfast and lunch programs available during the school week. They provide over 400 kids in inner city schools with meals to last beyond just the school week, because hunger doesn’t take the weekend off.
